The soft skills imperative

Surely, the value of soft skills has never been more pronounced than today. Gone are the days when simply "doing" a job sufficed. In the era of AI-driven automation, organisations are seeking individuals who can think differently, be agile, problem-solve, innovate, drive meaningful change or simply adapt to evolving circumstances and roles. For TAs, navigating this shift requires a nuanced approach—one that prioritises the assessment and cultivation of these essential soft skills.

Behavioural interviewing is one strategy, which prompts candidates to recount specific times they’ve used soft skills in past roles. By digging into these experiences, recruiters can gain valuable insights into a candidate's ability. Reference checking and asking for feedback from former colleagues helps you to get valuable perspectives, specifically on a candidate's interpersonal dynamics and adaptability. Consider using one of the wealth of 360 assessment tools that help review soft skills, consider developing your own soft skill matrix, identifying what are the key attributes you want to assess and of course there’s the age-old skill of observation - organise groups to understand how your candidate interacts within a group setting.
